TRIK: A Talking and Drawing Robot for Children with Communication Disabilities

ISAAC-2010, 14th Biennial Conference for Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Year of publication:
Conference paper - non peer reviewed

In this project we have developed and evaluated a setup involving a touch-screen computer with a dynamic screen software, and a drawing robot, which can communicate with each other via spoken language. The purpose is to help children with severe communication disabilities to learn language, language use and cooperation, in a playful and inspiring way.

The communication board speaks and the robot is able to understand and talk back. This encourages the child to use language and learn to cooperate to reach a common goal, which in this case is to get the robot to draw figures on a paper.

The robot has been tested on three children, two with cerebral palsy and one with autism spectrum disorder. During this session we present the preliminary results.
