The Department of Swedish at the University of Gothenburg has a vacancy for one or more postdoctoral fellow positions (one year, with a possible extension of up to one additional year) in Language Technology.

The successful applicant will conduct their research in the project "South Asia as a linguistic area? Exploring big-data methods in areal and genetic linguistics" http://spraakbanken.gu.se/eng/research/lsi, and specifically work on developing automatic information extraction and text mining methods for turning the content of conventional descriptive grammars (in free text) into formally structured information in a typological database. The source material will be in English, primarily the 268 grammar sketches from the Linguistic Survey of India will be targeted.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering invites applications for a senior lecturer position in data science. Areas of particular interest include data mining, machine learning, databases, and the application of data science methods in natural sciences, life sciences, humanities and social sciences, as well as in industry and society.

Ours is a joint department of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology, with around 80 faculty members and 70 PhD students from over 30 countries. The position is placed in the Computing Science Division, which is responsible for teaching and research in core areas of computer science, such as logic, algorithms and language. Our research spans both programming languages and natural languages, and we have close connections with several other scientific areas, such as language technology, bioinformatics and mathematics. The department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, FLoV announces one or several doctoral studentship position(s) within the research project Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) -- a project funded by a ten-year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). For a description of CLASP see CLASP.

The successful candidate is expected to devote her or his time primarily to the completion of obligatory course work and to write a doctoral dissertation. He or she may, however, also undertake a limited amount of teaching, administration or research not directly connected to her or his dissertation topic. Such duties extends the position accordingly.

As the position is funded in part by a research grant from the Swedish Research Council the successful candidate should write her or his doctoral thesis within one of the CLASP's core areas and the research should fit in within the research programme of the centre.

The doctoral student is also expected to participate in the department's activities, such as workshops, seminars and conferences.

The general entry requirements for third-cycle (doctoral) programmes are: a second-cycle qualification/degree and at least 240 higher education (HE) credits for courses of which at least 60 HE credits are awarded in the second-cycle; or equivalent training either in Sweden or abroad.

In addition, admission to the third-cycle programme in General Linguistics at University of Gothenburg also requires:

  1. at least 60 HE credits in general linguistics, phonetics, computational linguistics, language technology or logopedics at the second-cycle, of which at least 15 HE credits must be obtained on an independent project, and also at least 90 HE credits in related subjects, such as philosophy, cognitive science, communication, language subjects, or equivalent knowledge;

or

  1. at least 90 HE credits in general linguistics, phonetics, computational linguistics, language technology or logopedics, including at least 30 HE credits at the second-cycle, of which 15 HE credits must be obtained on an independent project, or equivalent knowledge.

The department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, FLoV announces one or several postdoctoral fellow position(s) within the research project Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) -- a project funded by a ten-year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). The postdoctor is expected to conduct individual research in CLASP's core areas of research in cooperation with the research group. Apart from research, duties may include mentoring graduate students, course design, and/or teaching-related activities; such supplementary duties will not exceed 20% of the position’s responsibilities. The holder of the position is expected to carry out the vast majority of her/his research in Gothenburg and to actively participate in the research group's workshops, seminars, and conferences.

A doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis should be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since the postdoctor position is designed to give new PhDs the opportunity to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, priority will be given to those whose doctoral degree was granted within 3 years of the application closing date.

Scientific proficiency is the most important criterion for assessment, and special attention will be given to the applicant’s PhD thesis and other publications, and to her/his research plan. Priority will be given to applicants whose research plan and prior work strengthen the research group’s and the project overall. Documented good interpersonal skills and good skills in terms of planning and organizing research and communicating their own research results is also meritorious. The applicant shall in addition to the project plan, cited documents and other documents provide contact information for two academics familiar with the research work of the applicant, for further contact/reference. The recruitment process may also include interviews.

The department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, FLoV announces a senior lecturer position within the research project Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) -- a project funded by a ten-year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). The Senior Lecturer will teach courses in CLASP's primary research areas to insure that the necessary training is given to the PhD students of the Centre. She/he will also contribute to CLASP's ongoing research, and to the supervision of its PhD students. The Senior Lecturer, together with the Director and the Research Coordinator will provide CLASP's core senior scientific training and research resources.

The holder of the position is expected to carry out the vast majority of her/his duties in Gothenburg.

A doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis should be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in at the Appointments procedure for teachers University of Gothenburg.

Teaching and research skills will be equally weighted in the assessment of candidates´ suitability. Scientific proficiency is assessed primarily on the basis of the applicant’s PhD thesis and other publications. Publications demonstrating close links to the research group's activities are a merit. Documented good interpersonal skills and good skills in terms of planning and organizing research and communicating their own research results is also meritorious.
