Håkan Burden, Division of Software Engineering, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, is defending his thesis "A Scholarship Approach to Model-Driven Engineering".


A Scholarship Approach to Model-Driven Engineering" sheds new light on software modelling by using the framework of Boyer's four functions of academic activity - the scholarships of teaching, discovery, application and integration:

Scholarship of Teaching: We report on the impact of introducing a modelling tool that enables continuous feedback on the students' modelling efforts and how pair lecturing engages the students in software modelling during our lectures.

Scholarship of Discovery: The possibilities and challenges of generating textual summaries in English from software models are explored for validation purposes.

Scholarship of Application: Through our collaboration with industry we show how the success of adopting Model-Driven Engineering technologies depends not only on technical aspects but also on organisational and social factors.

Scholarship of Integration: By combining our insights from teaching, discovery and application with a study at three companies, we, among many things, describe how Model-Driven Engineering can empower new user groups, enable faster development and depend on the tools for successful adoption.
